I really like the Moroccan interior design style! That is the reason why we have tadelakt on some walls here in Villa Natura. The picture below shows a floor in Marrakesh made with tadelakt.
A few weeks ago I visited Marrakesh, Morocco. We orderd among other things a beautifully carved wooden door. Many of the bathrooms were covered with tadelakt - both the shower walls and the sink.
We also visited craftsmen that work with tadelakt, on the outskirts of Marrakesh. We got to see how they cover huge clay pots with tadelakt.
Fantastic to watch when the hands of the skilled experts bring the smooth surface to life!
Best of all - we were able to buy the tadelakt rock from one of the craftsmen! It is a hard river rock with a polished surface that is used to polish the tadelakt before it is dry. The rock creates the marbled pattern. Every craftsmen has their own rock, one that fits nicely in their hand. When I did our tadelakt walls I did not have such a rock. It worked fine with a plastic spatula, but maybe it is time for me now to start another tadelakt project in the house?!

We still don't have a door to the utility room/guest bathroom downstairs...but those waiting for something good never wait too long. The door is centrally placed in our open floor plan. Therefore we wanted a special and beautiful door, preferrably something that would match our Moroccan inspired tadelakt walls. We just returned from a wonderful trip to Morocco with SidSid. After much looking we finally found a wonderfully carved door in cedar wood!
Vilket hantverk!
Handcraft at its best!
A small carpenter shop in a village outside Marrakesh got our measurements for the door and will make a similar door for us.
We hope to be able to install our new door in a few months!

We wanted to avoid grout lines in the bathroom. Glass walls would have worked - glass is waterproof, has no grout lines except the corners and also looks good...but only when clean. If your water is hard, like our, you end up spending more time cleaning your glass walls than cleaning yourself. Instead we chose tadelakt. We used tadelakt in three places:
1) en blå dusch på nedervåningen
1) a blue shower downstairs
2) en röd halvvägg på toaletten på nedervåningen
2) a red half wall in the downstairs bathroom
3) tegelröda badrumsväggar i gäststugan, i kombination med återvunnet tegel
3) brick red bathroom walls in the guesthouse, combined with reused brick
Tadelakt is an old technique from Marrakesh in Morocco. Traditionally you apply many layers of fine lime plaster and polish with a smoth river rock. You also work in olive soap in the surface that ends up being water repellent and smooth like velvet.
We used a simplified product called TadelaktPro from Deco Material and a plastic tool instead of a rock to create the smooth surface. The plaster is white and you add color in the form of powder until you reach the desired hue. The pigments are much stronger in color than the finished wall since you should not add more than about 15% pigment to the plaster.
Since the tadelakt gives a marbled limestone surface you don't really notice stains from hard water!

Skiffer pussel i gäststugan
Almost a year ago I wrote about the slate floor that we bought and sorted. We used the slate throughout the first floor of both houses (but not in the garage) and are very happy with that decision. It is a durable, nice looking floor that feels alive in its earthy tones and patterns.
It was worth the effort to open up all the crates and sort the slate tiles because they varied so much, in color and pattern. The picture above is from the guest house living room. The picture below is from the guest house entry way.
The shades of red in the entryway floor lead to the bathroom which has brick red tadelakt walls.
In the bathroom, we cut the 40x60 tiles into smaller mosaic pieces, approx. 10x10 cm, to ensure the slope towards the corner drain.
Vi lade skiffer plattorna i Höganäs LättFix FB1300.
We glued the slate tiles with Höganäs LättFix FB1300.
The result was good, but not quite finished without the grout. Since the slate tiles were very uneven in all directions we ended up using quite a bit of fix, and the grout lines are about 12 mm wide. Therefore, we also used a lot of grout.
We used Mapei Skiferfug as grout, squirted out by hand which was a bit labor intensive. Before we applied the grout we treated the slate tiles to avoid grout stains.

In one of the showers we are planning on using river rock
mosaic on the floor. You can buy ready
made squares with rocks glued onto fiberglas.
There are flat river rocks and there are round rocks if you prefer to
get a foot massage while showering.
But it is more fun to pick the rocks
ourselves on the beach! It is also much cheaper since the square foot price on
the ready made squares is quite high.
We are now testing how many rocks we need
and what it feels like to walk on them.
Undersöker också
färgskillnaden mellan torrt och vått!
Also exploring the color difference
between dry and wet rocks!

Flyter klackar
I teknikrummet
In the technique room there are lots of pipes coming up from the floor - for water and floor heating. We also have a large watertank for heating and hot water. We are now pouring liquid concrete around the edges to create a neat edge and a platform for the tank - makes it easier for putting floor tiles and waterproofing. It also means we can install the heating system before we put the floor tiles down!

Gift i våtrum
I have now purchased poison for the bathrooms...According to Swedish building regulations you have to waterproof the floor and walls of the bathroom to prevent water damage. However, we have built the walls with inorganic materials that can handle some moisture. Therefore, we only put the water proofing on the floor. 3 different buckets with chemicals - you create a plastic coating by using liquid plastic paint. I wish we did not have to use this stuff - but rules are rules. There are lots of brands to choose from for water proofing materials. All are poisonous...I chose Höganäs because our builders are used to working with their products.
