As I disclosed in an earlier post, I was considering a green sedum roof for our houses. Instead we ended up with used clay tile. We are very happy with the roof tiles. On the front porch we can have a green sedum roof since the pitch is only around 20 degrees!
When you build a green sedum roof you first need to consider the weight that it needs to hold since the rain water gets heavy. We have 3 trusses for this little roof, made from 145 mm boards (Organowood). Then you have to get a waterproof membrane since you don't want the moisture and water to get into your wooden construction. We used Icopal for the water proofing membrane. They also installed the metal edge with holes that keeps the soil and plants in place at the end of the roof but lets water into the gutter.
You can either buy ready sedum carpets or plant sedum shoots. The advantage with the carpets is that they tend to stay where you put them despite the wind which is more challenging with soil and small shoots. The draw back is that they cost more and that they tend to have less variety of sedum plants. We combined 3 square meters of sedum carpets with different types of sedum plants that we purchased separately. Here are the sedum carpets and the soil we purchased from Svenska Naturtak outside Malmö. The soil is special sedum roof soil to have low weight. It contains lava rock, pumice, compost and clay. We also purchased a moisture felt, RMS 500, which you put under the soil.
This spring we visited several nurseries and bought different sedum plants. We broke off small shoots and planted to grow our collection.
During the summer they grew, blossomed and changed colors!
We first put the sedum from Svenska Naturtak around the edges and on the top of the roof, then we added the smaller plants and shoots in the middle to get increased diversity.

After studying many different front porches I designed one for Villa Natura, in Google SketchUp:
I wanted to both frame and protect the main door. The benches are cozy but also practical when you are leaving the house with lots of stuff or coming home with muddy clothes from adventures in nature. The structure is approximately 1.5 meter deep by 3 m wide at the base, with the entrance 1.8 m wide. It is built from Organowood which we also used for our wooden deck, except the roofing material. We have treated it with "OrganoWood Smuts och Vattenskydd" but will otherwise leave it untreated so that it will become silvergrey with time. The roof is planted with sedum (more about that in the next post).

The watertank and solarpanels on the
roof are now installed! The spring sun is heating water for the floor
heating system as well as the hot tap water. We chose vacuum tube solar panels
and water tank from Sol & Energiteknik. The vacuum tubes give a more even effect than the flat solar panels. This is because they can use the sun beams when the sun is lower in the sky, as it is during spring and fall. In addition, the vacuum tubes react on UV radiation as well as infrared radiation - this means you don't need a perfectly sunny day to benefit from the tubes but daylight on a cloudy day will also contribute to heating up the water tank.

The garage ceiling is now installed - träullit acoustic boards, wood white, discrete, 60x120 cm. Looks nice!

Brandskydd
Our little house has a garage and a guest house. Above the garage is a sleep loft. According to Swedish building code, there is a higher risk of fire in the garage and therefore we need to protect the guest house. The code states EI30 for us which means that the materials need to withstand fire for at least 30 minutes. We are building the ceiling with 13 mm gypsum board and träullit acoustic boards. The wall between the garage and the guest house is built with 250 mm thick leca blocks. We have quite a few pipes coming up in this wall, both electrical and floor heating. As long as there is at least 50 mm of leca/stucco the wall will meet the EI30 requirement. Electrical cables through the ceiling also need to be fire proofed.

släpper ut mindre fukt i takisoleringen.
In November I researched the options for vapor membrane, the thin layer on the inside of the insulation that should stop warm indoor air from going into the insulation and condense. I wrote a blog post about the vapor membrane that we had planned on using which did not work in an environment with cement and stucco/plaster since they have high pH. We decided to go with a variable vapor membrane, Isover Vario Duplex. The permability varies with the humidity. When the humidity is low, in the winter, the membrane is very tight and does not let vapor into the roof insulation. But in the summer when the humidity is higher, the membrane becomes more permeable and lets moisture from the roof structure dry into the home and from there it is ventilated away.
We tape the overlap seams with regular Tesa seal flex tape - very sticky stuff!

Byggarna flyttar in
Finally, the roof is done! Even the ladder for the chimney and the ventilation pipes are in place. We still need to paint the facade but it is too cold for that now. It will also be a few weeks until we install the doors, so now we are using temporary doors.
The builders have moved inside now. We have turned on the heat and have 15 degrees Celsius inside the house, and reduced the humidity from 98% to 40%. The solar panels are prepared for installation but we cannot put in the heat pipes until the water tank is installed in the house. Even though it is cold outside and we don't see much of the sun in the winter they do get hot from UV radiation and cannot be installed until the heating system is ready inside the house. Instead we are now using electricity to heat up the floor pipes. We are in the process of installing the fire place which will be hooked up to a 750 liter water tank, for floor heating and hot water. Once it is installed with the water tank, the chimney is inspected and the weather protection tent is removed we can start to use all the scrap wood as a heat source instead of the electrical heating!
The furring strips were quickly put in place and then we put down the flax insulation, for sound proofing. In the big house we have many beams with cc 300 mm. Therefore I ordered the insulation in custom width so it would be easier to just roll it out instead of cutting the standard sized rolls.
We have also insulated the roof with flax, from Isolina in Finland. In the little house we used rolls of insulation while we used batts in the big house. With rolls you have fewer breaks/gaps but it is easier to work with the batts when the pitch is 45 degrees. Had we insulated from the outside it may have been easier with rolls, but they are heavy to work with. We used thin strips that we stapled to the trusses to keep the insulation in pace. In the little house we have 150 mm insulation, one layer. In the big house we have 150+150+100 = 400 mm insulation. The gables and interior walls are also insulated with flax batts - a wonderful natural material!
We purchased a special handsaw from Isolina to cut the batts and rolls, smooth edge with no teeth. The thin insulation you can cut with scissors. Even though this was a new material to work with for our builders it turned out to be fairly easy to insulate. Lots of insulation means lots of work and hauling bags around, regardless of the type of insulation batts one chooses. We are happy with a natural insulation material that can handle some moisture. If we do get some condensation in the insulation before the vapor barrier is installed it does not matter because the flax can handle it and will dry as soon as the humidity is reduced.

Finally the clay roof tiles are coming up on the roof and it looks really good!
We are using old Veberöd clay roof tiles, from Ystad Saltsjöbad. Feels like we have been scrubbing them all fall so it feels very good to finally see them on the roof, even though it is a lot of work to carry them up...Old roof tiles do not have the exact same measurements so it is a puzzle to get them in place, but easier than anticipated. These tiles are much heavier than new clay roof tiles, and they have more channels to direct water. We have chosen to screw down every fourth vertical row, in addition to the standard two rows all the way around. The roof tiles that were slightly broken are being used around skylights, in corners and the top row where we have to cut them anyway.
The tin-smith has installed the aluzink sheets in the corner between the roofs and will soon come with the aluzink sheets to cover the barge boards.
Solfångarna håller också på att monteras nu.
The support beams for the solar panels for hot water are also being installed now.
