I really like the Moroccan interior design style! That is the reason why we have tadelakt on some walls here in Villa Natura. The picture below shows a floor in Marrakesh made with tadelakt.
A few weeks ago I visited Marrakesh, Morocco. We orderd among other things a beautifully carved wooden door. Many of the bathrooms were covered with tadelakt - both the shower walls and the sink.
We also visited craftsmen that work with tadelakt, on the outskirts of Marrakesh. We got to see how they cover huge clay pots with tadelakt.
Fantastic to watch when the hands of the skilled experts bring the smooth surface to life!
Best of all - we were able to buy the tadelakt rock from one of the craftsmen! It is a hard river rock with a polished surface that is used to polish the tadelakt before it is dry. The rock creates the marbled pattern. Every craftsmen has their own rock, one that fits nicely in their hand. When I did our tadelakt walls I did not have such a rock. It worked fine with a plastic spatula, but maybe it is time for me now to start another tadelakt project in the house?!

We wanted to avoid grout lines in the bathroom. Glass walls would have worked - glass is waterproof, has no grout lines except the corners and also looks good...but only when clean. If your water is hard, like our, you end up spending more time cleaning your glass walls than cleaning yourself. Instead we chose tadelakt. We used tadelakt in three places:
1) en blå dusch på nedervåningen
1) a blue shower downstairs
2) en röd halvvägg på toaletten på nedervåningen
2) a red half wall in the downstairs bathroom
3) tegelröda badrumsväggar i gäststugan, i kombination med återvunnet tegel
3) brick red bathroom walls in the guesthouse, combined with reused brick
Tadelakt is an old technique from Marrakesh in Morocco. Traditionally you apply many layers of fine lime plaster and polish with a smoth river rock. You also work in olive soap in the surface that ends up being water repellent and smooth like velvet.
We used a simplified product called TadelaktPro from Deco Material and a plastic tool instead of a rock to create the smooth surface. The plaster is white and you add color in the form of powder until you reach the desired hue. The pigments are much stronger in color than the finished wall since you should not add more than about 15% pigment to the plaster.
Since the tadelakt gives a marbled limestone surface you don't really notice stains from hard water!

This summer, before we painted the facade, we installed the beautiful door that I wrote about in earlier posts - Main door from local carpenter, Art on the main door, The door is painted. We wanted to finish the stucco around the door so we could paint everything at once.
We are really happy with the door - size, color and design!

This week we finished our wooden deck!
It is built with OrganoWood, pressure treated wood without the regular green poison (biocides and heavy metals). A silicon based compound binds to the wood fibers making the product stronger and rot resistant.
The wood is light in color now, looks almost like we waxed it white. The white is salt that you can carefully sand or brush off. With time the wood will change to a beautiful light grey color, unless you choose to stain it.
We chose their premium wood which is already treated with a "dirt and water protection" product (which you can also buy in a bucket): supposed to prevent swelling of the wood in moist environments, reduce risk of algae growth and make it easier to keep clean. I tested with some water to ensure that we really got the premium version we ordered since you could not tell the difference by looking at it or touching it. Yes, the water stays as droplets on top of the surface instead of being absorbed by the wood!

If you live at a construction zone you spend more time building than blogging...Last I wrote a post we planted potatoes, and now we enjoy harvesting them! The kids drive their food truck from the garden to the kitchen.
Sometimes the red beets are so large they barely fit in a quart measuring cup!
A year ago we started digging. The diggers were recently back again to help us with some landscaping around the house.
We now have a few weeks of work waiting for us, with all the stones...it is quite heavy work when you are not used to it, so we do it in small portions.
Kullersten
Cobblestone (natural, round stone)
Gatsten
Cobblestone (cut granite blocks)
Sandsten
Sandstone
The main house is in the process of being finished too. In about a month we hope to move in. Right now we are working on the supports for the front porch!

We have now lived in the guesthouse for almost 3 weeks and like it here a lot! The construction project is taking up a lot of time, thus less time is devoted to the blog...
Lots has happened in the main house since the last blog post, almost 4 weeks ago: the downstairs walls are plastered with hydraulic lime plaster, slate floor and träullit acoustic boards in the ceiling, upstairs we now have walls with flax insulation and electrical cables, white waxed panel in the ceiling and on the walls, bathroom floor with floor heating and self-leveling concrete. Outside we have poured concrete for the foundation of a wall by the patio.
Now we take a break from the construction and plant the potato patch, enjoy locally baked pizza and celebrate Easter!

Stenfynd
Nu har jag fyndat
igen på Malmö Återbyggdepå!
More bargain hunting
at Malmö Återbyggdepå!
This time I
found two stone slabs that I will use as shelves on top of two half walls in
the bathrooms, one was lime stone the other marble. 100 SEK each! ErikssonsStenhuggeri in Ystad will cut them to size and polish the edges if necessary.
huset!
I
also bought some cut brick that we will use in the window sills – in the sauna
and by the shower. Will match the old brick wall in the house!

When it was time to pour the conrete for the staircase the pump truck came with the concrete.
It was an exciting day for two young boys who followed everything from pumping the concrete to polishing the steps.
While the concrete cured we had time to paint the garagedoors with linseedoil and sort old bricks by size - we are going to build an interior wall between the sauna and the dining area using beautiful old brick.

The watertank and solarpanels on the
roof are now installed! The spring sun is heating water for the floor
heating system as well as the hot tap water. We chose vacuum tube solar panels
and water tank from Sol & Energiteknik. The vacuum tubes give a more even effect than the flat solar panels. This is because they can use the sun beams when the sun is lower in the sky, as it is during spring and fall. In addition, the vacuum tubes react on UV radiation as well as infrared radiation - this means you don't need a perfectly sunny day to benefit from the tubes but daylight on a cloudy day will also contribute to heating up the water tank.
